Ethics In Education Network

To develop and support educational programs that instill habits of critical ethical inquiry, informed by principles of democracy and science, and ultimately bringing about social transformation.

The Ethics In Education Network (formerly TECCS Foundation) was incorporated in 2001 to develop and support ethics and social justice curricula for K-12 education. The Network envisions schools that are safe and caring communities where ethics, service, and social justice inform every aspect of school life; where teachers lead and collaborate with students in a culture of rigorous academics and mutual respect; where analytical thinking and creativity are prized over learning by repetition; where children will become individuals of integrity, insight, autonomy – and socially productive citizens, workers, leaders.

The Network has created the ethicsineducation.org website to provide resources to educators, parents, students and others who are engaged in creating or developing 21st century education congruent with John Dewey’s vision in all educational settings.

The Ethical Community Charter School. Founded in 2009. Located in Jersey City, NJ. Ethics is taught as a subject in its own right and ethical considerations are infused throughout the curriculum.
Ethical Education Study Group. Monthly gathering of educators and other thought leaders in New York City. Participants and guest speakers explore issues of ethics theory and practice.
Ethics in Education website. Launched January 2016.

Deweyan Ethics

Dewey’s approach to ethics entails rigorous ongoing ethical inquiry. No matter what the issue, an individual or institutional decision-maker should find the solution that creates the best outcomes for the most people. Ethical conclusions are always subject to revision in light of social and scientific developments.

From a Deweyan perspective, the ways in which society is organized are far more significant than our individual ethical choices. Schools and governments at every level need to be reordered so as to promote social experimentation and empathic policy-making. Institutions need to be diverse and inclusive so as to facilitate communication and understanding among different socioeconomic and ethnic groups.
